Rating: Five out of five stars
“Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic” by Meghan Ciana Doidge is a cute story full of, well – cupcakes, trinkets, and deadly magic! The book follows half-witch Jade as she runs her Vancouver bakery and is swept amidst an investigation conducted by vampires and werewolves.
Jade’s special power is dowsing, or the ability to sense and attract magic. She can taste the different kinds of magic as if they were cupcakes, and crafts together magical objects she finds, making trinkets to decorate her house, bakery, and herself. But when werewolves are murdered and decorated with her trinkets, Jade finds herself defending her name and joining the werewolves and vampire to find the killer.
Once I got into it, I could not put the book down and finished most of it in a day. It is a quick read told in Jade’s first person POV – the book is thus humorous as Jade keeps up her humor and positive attitude no matter what is happening.
This book gets real about anxiety and relationships. Jade experiences true panic attacks throughout the story, and the narrative deviates from what is normally expected in the romance department. I felt the whole gamut of emotions as I read.
I recommend this book to readers who are not yet tired of vampires/werewolves/zombies/witches, and who don’t mind getting cupcake cravings on every chapter!
This was my fifth book read for the #TackleTBR challenge. I met my goal – but it’s not over yet!
